It is important to remember how the Town Meeting decided to purchase the Busa land with $4.1 million of CPA funds. The plan agreed to by the Community Preservation Committee and presented at Town Meeting was for a “mixed-use” of the 7.9 acre piece. The various uses may include a multi-use Recreation field, some affordable housing and farming options. This purchase never would have been approved by the CPC or Town Meeting for only one use. The CPA law addresses several issues – in Lexington’s case: recreation, housing and open space.
Sandra,
The Town Meeting approved the putchase of that land for its unique geografical location — next to Arlington res , for its natural beauty and current look as valued open space ( you can review Central Register Info in the library). Many TM members witnessed a battle at informational meeting to change the warrant from all 3 uses to one or two or three ( and/or battle). If it was designated for any new specific use, the open bid process should have been used. There is other land in town suitable for sport fields and affordable housing and that land might cost less than 4 mln. It is just too expensive to buy a land for a soccer field for that price.
As a person who coached soccer and whose kids have played on Lexington Fields, I have always supported quality recreation. Lexington has a rich, high quality list of soccer, baseball, football and general recreation fields. In fact, we have an enviable amount of land devoted to youth sports.
But we have no such dedicated land for a community farm, and we need one, for education and for exposing our kids to a changing world. The ideas expressed in LexFarm are sound and have strong value for our town.
I am very enthusiastic about LexFarm. I think, in the long run and in the short run, it’s a very high value usage for Lexington.
