What’s New On and Off the Farm

seed libraryIn conjunction with The Lexington Seed Library, seed starting classes were once again offered in the greenhouse this year.  Participants learned about the difference between hybrid, open-pollinated and heirloom seed varieties as well as the merits of different germination mixes. Light, moisture, temperature and air requirements were addressed and everyone planted a full flat of seeds, using our LexFarm preferred soil mix, to take home and nurture, weeks in advance of the last frost date.

Spring Organic Gardening classes 101 and 102 have begun for a number of Town of Lexington and Lexington Public School Employees. These special classes are offered as an Employee Benefit through the Town’s Department of Human Resources Wellness Programming. Last year a new Community Garden was created behind the Central Office to enable school and town personnel to follow the LexFarm motto of “Growing Community, Community Grown.” Read the article in The Colonial Times.

Our educators are available to help your company put in place a wellness community garden for your employees. Planting the garden or sharing what you all grow is a great team building exercise and good for employee retention and well-being. Contact [email protected] for more information.

goatsGreat news! At Silk Fields Farm, located just behind Lexington Community Farm, three baby goats were born on April 1st! They’re all healthy male kids: Charlie, Jojo, and Fudge. The mother goat, Lilac, is doing well. They have a heat lamp in order to keep them warm. You won’t see them outside yet (they are too small), but soon they will be big enough to be out playing with the others!

There will be a Spring Open Barn event at Silk Farm on Sunday, May 15th from 12:00 to 2:30. Come play with the goats, feed the chickens (and our soon-to-arrive chicks), and see the bunnies! There will also be homemade lemonade and warm chocolate chip cookies for sale (all proceeds will go to charity). We hope to see you there!
