Our Volunteer Program offers opportunities for individuals, families and groups to participate in the life of Lexington Community Farm. We strive to accommodate as many volunteers as possible, within the constraints of operating a professionally managed farm operation. Most volunteer opportunities are for people 16 years and older, although we do have a few farm tasks that lend themselves to people as young as 8. Volunteer work happens in the fields, greenhouses, around the farm property and in Board of Director and committee meetings.
Field Work. Experience the rewards and challenges of growing vegetables the old-fashioned way. Lexington Community Farm is a working farm: Our field volunteers do work that is often physically challenging and always rewarding. Join us April through November as we prepare the fields, plant, hoe, mulch and harvest organically-grown vegetables and fruit. No experience is needed. Greenhouse Work. Enjoy the warmth of our cozy greenhouses while winter’s chill is still in the air! We start up our greenhouses in February, and by April we are potting up thousands of flower, tomato, pepper, eggplant and herb seedlings. Greenhouse work is well suited to folks whose backs and knees have seen better days. No experience is needed. Farm Property Work. Get a taste of what it takes to keep a modern farm in working order. Join us as we maintain, repair, improve and build farm infrastructure. Farmers have always had to be jacks-of-all-trades, needing a broad skill set to keep the farm running smoothly. Luckily, you don’t need a broad skill set – we will teach you what you need to know. INTERESTED IN SOMETHING ELSE?
WordPress Website Maintainer. We are looking for a volunteer to assist with maintaining our current custom WordPress website. There are no design responsibilities in this position, just posting board approved articles and information, maintaining active links and providing statistical data to staff and board directors. The Communications Committee keeps LexFarm members informed about what’s happening at the farm and in our community. We publish a monthly newsletter and seasonal, weekly CSA updates, as well as maintain the Farm’s social media and website. Currently we are looking for volunteers with web design and social media skills. We are also looking for people who enjoy writing and would like to get involved in publicity. The Development Committee is responsible for fundraising to support LexFarm programs. We connect with member and corporate donors through calls and emails, farm tours and thank you events and we generate a year-end appeal mailing. It is also our hope to run one fundraising event and one cultivation event next year. We are currently looking for 2 people to join our committee to help us write fundraising materials and with donor outreach. The Nominating and Board Development Committee is responsible for finding new Board members and for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the Board of Directors. We are always eager to interview potential Board of Director members with experience on working on nonprofit Boards.
