Notes from the Field: Week 20

Notes from the Field: Week 20

Notes from the Field

It’s the last week of our Summer CSA! And seemingly perfect timing, as our first freeze is predicted for Thursday night. We have a very busy week ahead of us as we bring in a big harvest for our final summer CSA distribution, prepare sensitive crops for the freeze (see cilantro, below), and continue to take down trellised plantings and seed cover crops. The weather looks beautiful, and (while cozy in an extra layer of long underwear) I’m looking forward to one of our final weeks of full sunshine and good company from our farm crew.

Last night several volunteers, work shares, and staff got together for a potluck celebration. We gathered in the greenhouse under bright lights, and shared a meal full of LexFarm vegetables and herbs. Farm potlucks highlight the thing that brings our whole community together every week of the season in the farm stand: an appreciation for fresh, delicious food grown on a farm we can all interact with. Thank you for acting on your appreciation for local food and farms, by signing up for a CSA share, shopping in our farm stand, or being a LexFarm member.

You’ll be hearing from me again in two weeks, before our first Fall CSA distribution, Bulk Sale pick up, and open farm stand on November 2 and 3.
Stay cozy and healthy, and enjoy your vegetables!
