ORGANIC CSA

2024 Community Supported Agriculture

Overview

A Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program connects you with your food. By buying a share in the winter, you’re reserving weekly pick-ups of sustainably-grown produce right here on our farm. Throughout the growing seasons, you visit the farm to pick them up.

We plant, grow, and harvest vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers to provide fresh, certified-organic produce to the community. And, we partner with local farms to supplement what we can’t grow. This allows us to offer fruit, mushrooms, and additional varieties of vegetables.

See complete information about CSA offerings below.

Expanded CSA Offerings

We are expanding our CSA Program in several ways this year.  We are continuing our partnership with Fat Moon Farm and offering Mushroom Shares for the entire year.  New this year is an Egg Share with eggs from Chip-In Farm in Bedford, MA and a Winter Vegetable Share with organic produce grown by Red Fire Farm in Montague/Granby, MA.  We also are very excited to offer a Spring Vegetable Share with some LexFarm-grown produce, which is possible with all the improvements and investments we have made on our farm!

We will continue to offer our Summer, Flower, and Fall Shares.  Our pilot last year with the Preservers Share was successful and will continue as the renamed Gleaners’ Share.  And many of you will be glad to know that we are doubling the available number of Fruit Shares.

Winter

Winter Vegetable Share

New this year at LexFarm- we are thrilled to announce that we will be partnering with Red Fire Farm (Montague/Granby, MA) to bring you an organic winter veggie CSA! This new CSA option will run for eight weeks consecutively from February 1- March 22. This share will consist mainly of root veggies, as well as some greens and some other fun surprises. Pick up is Fri/Sat. Secure your spot now!

Spring

Spring Vegetable Share

We’re excited to announce that we’re piloting a Spring Share for 2024. You will pick up veggies on Wed/Thu over 3-5 weeks in the spring, starting in late April or early May. This share will consist primarily of fresh greens, herbs and radishes or salad turnips. Welcome the spring by eating farm fresh, locally grown veggies.

Summer

Summer Vegetable Share

Our Summer Vegetable Share runs for 20 weeks from early June to October. Exact dates are TBD and are based on early spring conditions. We typically start the 1st or 2nd week of June.

We offer two size options:

  • Full Share: 20-weeks: Pickup your share EVERY week of the season.
  • Half Share: 10-weeks: Pickup your share EVERY OTHER week of the season. (You will be assigned to the ODD or EVEN week group when we announce the start date of the CSA.)

Summer Vegetable Shareholders have two options for pick up. There are a limited number of spots available for each option, so an early sign up is necessary to secure your preference.

  • Option 1: Wednesday or Thursday
  • Option 2: Friday or Saturday

All of the produce in the share is certified organic. The majority is grown at LexFarm and is supplemented with additional vegetables and some melon from other local farms to offer you a wide variety of produce.  Working with other farms allows us to offer more shares and more variety to those shares, while also allowing us to take better care of our soils.  Each week, we strive to include an allium (onion/garlic family), fresh eating greens, cooking greens, herbs and bulkier veggies to round out your meals.

Our share also includes an educational and fun Pick-Your-Own experience and weekly newsletters with recipe ideas, youth education classes and events, and opportunities to get involved in the farm.

FarmBucks

The Summer Vegetable Share includes our “FarmBucks” program to provide additional variety and/or volume to weekly shares. FarmBucks can be used to purchase any seedling or produce for sale in the farm stand during the 2024 Summer CSA season.

  • 20-week Summer Vegetable Share includes $70 in FarmBucks.
  • 10-week Summer Vegetable Share includes $35 in FarmBucks.

FarmBucks allow you to purchase produce in the farm stand that are not included in the shares. Space constraints and disease and pest pressures are the major reasons for not growing 200+ of certain crops (like fennel)! We can offer a smaller quantity of a wider variety of produce in the farm stand, and we created Farm Bucks to give you access to that produce.

FarmBucks are tracked at the farm stand (no need to remember a card) and may be used to purchase any produce or seedlings in the stand, any time we are open during the 2024 Summer CSA season.

FarmBucks EXPIRE on the last pickup day of the SUMMER CSA SEASON. No exceptions.

Gleaners’ Share (formerly Preservers’ Share)

The new iteration of our “Preservers’ Share” – this Pick-Your-Own (PYO) Share will occur over the course of the entire growing season with 6-8 harvesting opportunities possible from mid-June through the beginning of October. This is a program geared towards the food waste warrior and canner/preserver.

Note that PYO opportunities will not necessarily occur in consecutive weeks, so folks signing up for this share will need to be flexible as we often make the plan on our Monday field walks. You will be able to PYO any time the farmstand is open during the designated weeks AND (new for 2024) on Thursdays between 7:30 am and 7 pm. In 2023 shareholders received snap peas, green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, greens, herbs and lemongrass with a total value far exceeding the purchase price of the share. Note: Not all items are suitable for canning (like kale and herbs) but all can be preserved by freezing, drying, canning, pickling, fermentation or other forms of preservation.

Flower Share

Our Flower Share consists of pick-your-own bouquets averaging 24 stems (up from 20 stems in 2022) per week for 12 consecutive weeks. We plant celosia, snapdragons, rudbeckia, sunflowers, cosmos, marigolds, zinnias, statice, ageratum, gomphrena, strawflower, and more!  Historically flowers are ready to pick starting in mid-July. You may pick your share anytime the farm store is open. There’s a unique joy in picking your flowers, and the satisfaction of seeing a bouquet come together, knowing that you personally selected each stem.

Fruit Share

We are partnering with Autumn Hill Orchards and Warner Farm to provide a 13-15-week fruit CSA. All fruit is grown locally in Groton and Sunderland MA using IPM (Integrated Pest Management) growing practices. Each farm ensures the most sustainable practices are used to grow their fruit.

The Fruit Share will be available starting in mid-July. You can expect the first few weeks to be blueberries, plums, and raspberries in pints or quarts, and the later weeks to be bulkier with peaches, nectarines, and lots of fun varieties of apples. As per usual with a CSA share in New England, everything is subject to change depending on how each crop does in the climate of next season. Our goal is to get you a little bit of everything!

Please note that pickups of a Fruit Share are limited to Wed/Thu to ensure the quality of produce.  If you are ordering a Summer Vegetable Share, we suggest that you select Wed/Thu pickup to align your visits to the farm. Note that we cannot guarantee you a Wed/Thu pickup. Also note that if you are ordering a 10-week Summer Vegetable Share, the Fruit Share is distributed in consecutive weeks, while the 10-week Summer Vegetable Share is distributed in alternate weeks.  Keep that in mind when planning your pickup schedule.

In 2023 there was a late killing frost that destroyed stone fruit buds, eliminating those from the Shares. We’re hopeful that the climate cooperates with stone fruit growers this year, but, in farming there are no promises.

Fall

Fall Vegetable Share

Our Fall Share consists of four biweekly pickups in November and December. Fall pickups are larger than weekly summer shares as a majority will be storage crops, and it’s meant to last for two weeks instead of one!

New this year, shareholders will be able to choose from two pick-up schedules.  There will be limited quantities in each session. Pick-up days will be Fri/Sat.

  • Session A – Oct 25-26, Nov 8-9, Nov 22-23, Dec 13-14
  • Session B – Nov 1-2, Nov 15-16, Dec 6-7, Dec 20-21

Supporting Food Access

Increasing food access is core to LexFarm’s mission and we want to make that very clear when you purchase a CSA Share. Food insecurity continues to be an issue for many in our community.  This year, we will continue to offer subsidized shares to SNAP recipients and donate at least 10% of what we grow to local food access programs. If you are interested in helping us feed those in need, please consider making a donation to our 2024 Feed Local, Give Local campaign. Donated funds will go directly towards expenses associated with growing and harvesting food – seeds, fertility, greenhouse and field supplies, energy and labor – to provide access to those in need.
