3/31/2026 Update

THANK YOU LexFarm Community! YOU DID IT!!

Incredible!! In just 3 weeks we’ve met our goal raising over $24,000 for the Adopt an Animal Campaign, meaning that LexFarm can confidently keep and care for these beloved animals throughout the coming year, preserving them as a resource, and source of joy, for the whole community.  Thank you to the 80+ donors who stepped up swiftly and with great generosity these last weeks. We’re inspired, heartened and incredibly grateful for this amazing show of support!!!

3/10/2026 Update

We are excited to launch our “Adopt an Animal” campaign to help care for ALL the Silk Fields Farm animals that LexFarm is committed to. Please visit our campaign page and Adopt an Animal today!

3/3/2026 Update

We had the opportunity to acquire the animals and we took it!!
Starting on March 1st, LexFarm has taken over the care of ALL the animals from Silk Fields Farm!

As we continue to work towards resolving the future of the land, we’ll begin renting the space where the animals currently live and caring for them as our own. Thank you to the Silk Fields owners for collaborating with us on this endeavor!! By acquiring the animals, LexFarm hopes to preserve them as a community resource and more fully incorporate them into our education programs and farming practices.

We are also thrilled to share that B.J. Daniel (of Farmstand fame) is the new Livestock Manager for LexFarm. BJ will have the help of longtime LexFarm animal caregiver & farm photographer Terry Donovan. Be sure to say hi to them next time you visit the animals!

We’ll be relying on our community to keep this going!
We’ll launch an “Adopt an Animal” mini-fundraiser next week to help offset new costs in this first year of animal care. We urgently need the community to step up and support our commitment to keeping these sweet animals on the farm and part of our programs. Through Adopt an Animal, community members can contribute towards feed, veterinary care, shearing, land/barn rental, etc. In return we’ll send out photos and provide updates and special programs for all supporters. It should be a lot of fun!  Stay tuned for more info soon!

1/22/2026 Update

Thanks to your advocacy, there will be no near-term development of the land—a meaningful and positive outcome.

The owners of Silk Fields have asked LexFarm to begin assuming responsibility for the care of the animals starting March 1. As a result, animal care and associated expenses will begin in the coming weeks. At the same time, LexFarm is actively exploring options for how to fund the ongoing costs related to Silk Fields and is working closely with the property owners to determine a thoughtful, long-term path forward for the animals and the land. This is a developing situation, and we will continue to keep you informed.

In the meantime, if you have experience with fundraising or are a real estate attorney and would be open to offering guidance, we would welcome the opportunity to connect. Please email [email protected].

11/21/2025 Update

The issues you care about have gotten publicity. The Lexington Observer, a weekly digital publication, published an article today on the impact of development of Silk Fields Farm on LexFarm and the community. The article explains that development of Silk Fields — home to beloved goats, alpacas, chickens, and long a partner to LexFarm’s education programs — creates uncertainty about the future of the land, the animals, and the shared landscape the community cherishes. The article can be found on the LexObserver website .

On a related note, I want to thank all of you who contacted the Community Preservation Committee with your concerns about Silk Fields. We are awaiting a date and time for the meeting, and will announce it here as soon as we get notice.

11/4/2025 Update

We have recently learned that the Town of Lexington has submitted an application to the Lexington Community Preservation Committee (CPC) to purchase the Silk Fields property. The CPC will review the application at a public meeting in the coming weeks, and public comments are welcome both in advance and during the meeting.

Although any potential purchase by the Town would likely proceed only if the property cannot be developed by a private party, we strongly encourage community members, especially Lexington residents, to share their support for this possibility by emailing the Committee at [email protected].

In your message, please describe how you or your family engage with Silk Fields—whether through visits, classes, or other experiences—and the impact the land and animals have had on you.

Your voice truly makes a difference. The last time we asked community members to reach out to the Town, the board opened the meeting by reading aloud many of the heartfelt messages they received.

Your voice matters—please take a moment to speak up for Silk Fields!

10/28/2025 Update

We have been encouraged by the outpouring of support for the Silk Fields animals and the way Silk Fields Farm has enriched the experiences of our LexFarm community.

We have learned that the development company engaged by the Silk Field owners has a limited time to evaluate whether to proceed with the purchase and development of the property. However, no development can proceed without approval from the town of Lexington – including the Planning Board and Conservation Commission. Community members will have important opportunities to make their voices heard at upcoming public meetings.

Stay tuned for details on how to participate!

10/07/2025 Update

The owner of Silk Fields, the property behind LexFarm housing the goats, alpacas, and chickens, has been exploring development options for the land. Over the past few weeks LexFarm has been exploring various options available to maintain continuity for the animals. At this time we don’t have a clear path forward, but LexFarm is already planning a future capital campaign. If you believe you have some expertise and time to lend a hand in this effort, please reach out to us at [email protected].

To receive updates about our upcoming campaign, please sign up for the Silk Fields interest list at the top of this page.

09/16/2025 Update

Many in our community know and love the goats, alpacas, and chickens at Silk Fields, located at 7 Farm Road, directly behind LexFarm. What you may not know is that this 2.5-acre property is privately owned, and the owner is now exploring development options for the site.

These animals have been a joyful draw for visitors and an important part of our education programs. We are deeply grateful to the Silk Fields owners, who have been wonderful neighbors and partners. So, LexFarm continues to work with them toward the best possible outcome — for them, for the farm, and for the community.

We know many of you will want to stay informed as the future of this property unfolds.
